Wine tourism: discovering Luxembourg's vineyards

Modest in size, but of rare diversity, Luxembourg’s wine-producing region has nothing to envy of its French or German neighbours.

Luxembourg, land of contrasts

Not far from the tumult of the capital, vines cover the hills of the Moselle valley. On the frontier with Germany, 42 km of this peaceful river are bordered by vines between Schengen and Wasserbillig. Less than an hour’s drive away, picture-postcard scenery enjoyed on foot, by bike or boat. Set off to discover picturesque villages and their nearby vineyard properties. Dating back to Roman times, Luxembourg wines make for fascinating oenotourism stays.

A rich terroir

On estates sometimes centuries old, vintners share their family tale, their passion for their work, and their wines’ specific features. Often connoisseurs of French or German wines, visitors thus discover a unique terroir.

The soil’s complexity, composition and water supply produce a rich range of wine with incomparable characteristics. Giving priority to whites, Luxembourg offers these varieties ideal conditions for maturing. While known for its dry wines, it still offers wide diversity. The Moselle Luxembourgeoise ‘‘appellation d’origine’’ covers 14 varieties. Le Rivaner, an age-old wine in the Grand Duchy, accounts for a third of production. Riesling and Burgundy varieties L’Auxerrois and Le Pinot Gris also claim a good share. These wines, lively and elegant or rounded and aromatic, introduce each visitor to local flavours. Still white wines are certainly a great classic, but make way for enticing reds and sparkling wines of high quality.

A wine for each moment

Luxembourg’s vineyard can pride itself on a complete and varied array of wines to enhance each culinary experience. Sparkling Crémants or fruity, flowery Gewürztraminers as an aperitif. Elegant and subtle, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, perfect companions for traditional Luxembourg recipes. Full-bodied Pinot Noirs, ideal for meat dishes. Not forgetting late grape harvests and ice wines, wonderful with desserts. In Luxembourg’s vineyards, you are sure to discover unexpected gems!
