Le Royal, a green hotel

Awarded Luxembourg’s EcoLabel, ‘‘silver’’ level, the hotel has adopted an ambitious environmental charter.

“Luxembourg is a green country; under Napoleon, it was a forestry department. Here too, everyone has become aware of ecological problems and preservation of the planet.” Philippe Scheffer, General Manager of Le Royal, is thus delighted to see his hotel awarded Luxembourg’s EcoLabel. It provides recognition for the country’s tourist establishments which introduce ecological management and environmentally friendly practices. “We have done away with plastic straws and toothpicks,” adds Philippe Scheffer, mentioning a few everyday examples. “We have also created a supply system to water our green areas, installed beehives on the hotel roof, and charging points for electric vehicles, including Porsches.” Le Royal also encourages the use of public transport.

The hotel has adopted an environmental charter resulting in a series of strong commitments. Energy and water consumption is controlled thanks to monthly analyses and various procedures such as use of compact fluorescent spotlights, LEDs for permanent lighting, and flow regulators installed on faucets and showers. Waste water and rubbish are collected and treated, while installations containing CFCs, responsible for the hole in the Earth’s layer of ozone, are discontinued. Biodiversity is not forgotten in this ambitious action plan, with reduced use of insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. Finally, Le Royal’s purchasing policy aims to obtain the best products while honouring the principles of sustainable development and fair trade. A “green” hotel in a green country: such is the ambition of Le Royal.
