Smile, you are in the museum!

The “Museumsmile” itinerary invites you to discover seven great museums in Luxembourg.

By looking at map of the city of Luxembourg, you will see that seven museums can easily be reached on an itinerary in the shape of a big smile. Thus was born the Museumsmile’’, also a play on words referring to the distance separating one from the other, 1 mile (1.6 km). Within easy walking distance, the five museums in the centre are remarkable for their unique exhibitions on history, archeology, contemporary art and natural history. And the two cultural centres on the Plateau de Kirchberg have nothing to envy of those in the centre. Overview of a very special cultural destination… wearing a smile!

Villa Vauban

The City of Luxembourg’s Art Museum is housed in an impressive 19th-C. villa in the midst of the town park. The Villa Vauban contains rich collections of ancient art (paintings, sculptures, engravings) and contemporary art (paintings, sculptures, photographs). Most of its exhibitions focus on landscapes and the representation of historic scenes from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Lëtzebuerg City Museum

Dedicated to the city of Luxembourg’s cultural heritage (tangible and intangible) from the 10th century to the present day, the Lëtzebuerg City Museum tells the tale of the Grand-Duchy placed in a national, regional and European context. In its temporary exhibitions, it proposes socio-cultural themes addressing the current concerns of its multicultural, local and foreign public.

“Musée National d’Histoire Naturelle”

Fans of zoology, paleontology, anthropology or astrophysics, the National Museum of Natural National History is perfect for you!  It in fact contains the country’s most important zoological, botanical and mineral collections, with only the most remarkable specimens taking their place in the showcases of the ‘‘natur musée’’. Educational offerings complete and explain the temporary exhibitions, raising vistors’ awareness of issues related to the protection of nature and preservation of the planet.

Casino Luxembourg - “Forum d’Art Contemporain”

International contemporary art is here awarded a place of honour, though the Casino Luxembourg - Forum d’Art Contemporain stands out by highlighting young artists. Next to a library specializing in contemporary art, the ground floor also offers a ‘‘Blackbox’’ screening room dedicated to artists’ videos. Housed in the former ‘‘Casino Bourgeois’’, a cultural centre and meeting-place for the middle class in the 19th century, the Casino functions like a laboratory for artistic experiments in emerging trends.

“Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art”

In addition to several temporary exhibitions held each year, the National Museum of Art and History plays host to national archeological, historic and artistic collections. From Prehistoric times to the Middle Ages, and including a collection of European Fine Arts and a room devoted to medals, the museum offers a vast cultural panorama. It also organizes and supervises archeological excavations undertaken each year in Luxembourg.

Dräi Eechelen Museum

Unique in Luxembourg and a symbol of the country’s history, the site of Fort Thüngen plays host to the Dräi Eechelen Museum. Its original itinerary tells and illustrates the past of the Fortress of Luxembourg and its importance in the territorial formation of the country and its identity.

“Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean” (MUDAM)

Designed by Ieoh Ming Pei and built on Fort Thüngen’s ancient ramparts, the MUDAM  (Grand-Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art) exhibits the best of international contemporary art, while giving the Luxembourg scene the chance to present artworks.
